History Of The Caspian Horse
The Caspian Horse is an Ancient Breed dating back to 3400 BC., and was previously believed to have been extinct for over 1,000 years! This breed is the most direct ancestor of the Oriental breeds, and
Pre~Date the Arabian Horse by 1,000 Years! The Tiny Prehistoric Horse of Persia is said to be the Modern Caspian Horse.

The Caspian is extremely rare, and barely pulled back from the edge of extinction in 1965. Louise Firouz, an American living in Iran, is credited with recognition of this ancient breed.

A survey conducted from July 1965 through August 1968 to determine the range and approximate number of remaining Caspians. The survey indicated that there were approximately 50 small horses with definite Caspian characteristics along the entire littoral of the Caspian Sea.

During the period from 1965 ~ 1970 - 7Mares and 6 Stallions were used for breeding at Norouzabad Stud. During that time it was observed that the growth of the Caspian is distinctive in that most of the height is attained within the first 6 months of life and subsequent growth is minimal, mostly being width and secondary sexual characteristics. Sexual maturity is reached in both colts and fillies at about 18 months.

The Caspian is very versatile and is becoming well known in the Eastern Hemisphere with its exceptional jumping ability. The driving power that endeared it to Darius the Great still makes this horse a favorite in harness. Standing at only 10 ~ 12.2 Hands, Caspian Horses make a perfect child mount.
